Arthur Bleazard, Private, 8th Bn., Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regt.) Missing presumed killed Thursday 12th August 1915 aged 26. Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Bleazard of Bolton-by-Bowland. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.

Ben Brotherton, Private, 2nd/6th Bn. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regt.) Missing presumed killed Thursday 3rd May 1917, aged 24. Son of Thomas Brotherton of Bolton-by-Bowland and brother of Richard. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

Alfred Carey MM, Corporal, 2nd/5th Bn. (Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regt.) Killed in action Wednesday 6th November 1918 aged 24. Son of Alfred and Elizabeth Carey, Copy Nook Hotel, Bolton-by-Bowland and brother of Harold. Buried Fontaine-au-Bois Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.

Harold Carey, Private, 1st/6th Bn. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Reg.) Killed in action on Monday 27th December 1915 aged 27. Son of Alfred and Elizabeth Carey and brother of Alfred. Buried at Talana Farm Cemetery, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Riley Chew, Gunner, 2 Army Pool, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died aged 28 on Saturday 14th July 1917. Son of William & Millicent Chew and husband of Maud Chew of Hellifield. Commemorated at Dickebusch New Military Cemetery Extension, Leper, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Richard Ellison, Private, Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment) who died on the 8th July 1916. Buried at Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt France. Formerly from Rawtenstall but worked as a gardener at Bolton Hall.

Charles Geldard, Private, 13th Bn. Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action Wednesday 23rd October 1918 aged 20. Son of Henry and Grace Geldard of Cowhouse Hill Farm, Bolton-by-Bowland and cousin of Nicholas Geldard. Buried at Premont British Cemetery, Aisne, France

Nicholas Geldard, Private, 2nd/6th Bn. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regt) Killed in action Sunday 16th September 1917 aged 22. Son of Nicholas and Mary Ann Geldard of Stoop Lane, Bolton-by-Bowland. Cousin of Charles Geldard. Buried at Favreuil British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Harold Greenhalgh (also known as Greenhow), Private, 10th (Service) Bn. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment) Died on Sunday 13th December 1914. Died of pneumonia. Buried at Aldershot Military Cemetery. Came from Kirkoswald Cumberland. Formerly footman at Closes Hall.

Percy Hargreaves, Private, C Company, 10th Bn. Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Died of wounds Monday 28th May 1917 aged 39. Son of Henry Hargreaves of Bolton-by-Bowland. Buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

George Harrison, Rifleman, 1st/7th Bn. West Yorkshire Regt. (Prince of Wales Own—Leeds Rifles) Died Tuesday 9th October 1917 aged 30. Husband of Margaret Harrison of Bolton-by-Bowland. Commemorated Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium. Came from Tosside. He had been a churchwarden at Rathmell before the war.

Reginal Victor Killeen, Private, 3rd Dragoon Guards, (Prince of Wales Own) Killed in action Tuesday 25th January 1916 aged 18. Son of Inspector Edward and Minnie Killeen, Police Office, Barnoldswick and formerly of Bolton-by-Bowland. Buried at Vermelles British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

James Parker Metcalfe
James Parker Metcalfe, Private, 2nd Bn. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regt.)  Died Friday 19th April 1918 aged 23. Son of Thomas and Mary Metcalfe, Gills Farm, Tosside. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. When he enlisted he was a farm man for Snape House, Austwick.

Dawson Parkinson, Private, 2nd Bn. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regt.) Died Saturday 22nd December 1917 aged 38 whilst a Prisoner of War. Husband of Alice Parkinson of Nook Cottage, Bolton-by-Bowland. Buried at Berlin South Western Cemetery, Brandenburg, Germany.

Frank Pickthall, Private, 1st/4th Bn. Kings Own (Royal Lancaster Regt) Missing presumed killed on Tuesday 31st July 1917. Commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ieper, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. When called up he was a farm servant at the Coach and Horses Hotel.

Samuel Pinder / Hayhurst - presumed dead on 3rd May 1917 aged 36 he served in the 15th battallion regt Princeof wales own WY 38239 and is on the Arras memorial as Samuel Hayhurst. Comments on the Cravens part in the great war web state see Samuel Hayhurst (38239)- alias Samuel Pinder.

Thomas Simpson, Private Leicestershire Regiment 2/4th Battalion. Son of Mr & Mrs Simpson, Old Greenwoods Farm, Bolton by Bowland, killed in action 18th April 1918. Aged 25 years. Commemorated on the Memorial in the Ploegsteert at Comines-Warneton, Hainant in Belgium.

​David Moon
David Moon, Lance Corporal, REME, killed by a mine in the Glenshane Pass, County Antrim, on 24th June 1972 - aged 24. Born in Clitheroe, the son of Mr & Mrs Frank Moon, David was married in St Peter & St Paul's Church at Easter 1971 to Miss Irene Haythornwaite of Park View, Bolton-by-Bowland. His funeral was held at St Peter & St Paul's Church on 29th June, 1972. The family had been offered a military funeral in Ireland, but decided that David's last resting place should in the area he loved so much, close to his family and friends.
